Dharma Transmission « Sweeping Zen

Dharma transmission refers to the confirmation of a student’s enlightenment by another transmitted teacher, often the teacher they have been studying with (but not always). Dharma transmission grants the newly transmitted teacher the authority to now carry on the lineage, taking on students of their own and teaching independently. According to Zen lore, the first example of dharma transmission is found in the story of the historical Buddha’s “mind-to-mind” transmission of the “true Dharma eye” to his disciple, Mahakasyapa.
